Maybe Focus, the classic 1961 collaboration between Eddie Sauter and Stan Getz, should have prepared us for the scope and virtuosity of Stan Getz Plays Music from the Soundtrack of the Motion Picture 'Mickey One.'
Composer, arranger, conductor and producer Sauter uses the inspired tenor saxophonist, full string orchestra, large brass and woodwind sections, piano, guitar and a four-man percussion unit to create a score that lurches from the orchestral influences of Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky and Bernard Herrmann to Third Stream experimentation, swaying sambas, beer-barrel polkas, 1960s TV themes, Mancini-style crime jazz, very bad rock 'n' roll, Viennese waltzes, cartoon music, three-ring circuses, Las Vegas lounges and New Orleans funeral processions.
Sauter and Getz are said to have spent long hours viewing rough cuts of the film, which may explain why they enjoyed the full support of producer/director Arthur Penn and film editor Aram Avakian.
In addition to the contents of the MGM LP,Verve's CD reissue of Mickey One adds previously unreleased with music, dialog and sound effects from the movie. Rounding out this generous package are five excerpts from unaccompanied tenor-sax solos that were later triple-tracked for use in a cue called "Mickey's Flight." |
