Those of you who have not yet seen Requiem for a Dream may find this score slight and repetitive at times. Those who have will find Clint Mansell's music evocative and exhausting.
Requiem for a Dream, Darren Aronowsky and Hubert Selby, Jr.'s adaptation of the 1978 novel, traces the complete disintegration of four basically decent characters played by Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans.
The soundtrack, produced for Nonesuch by Mansell and David Harrington of Kronos, features electronic sounds programmed by the composer and string-quartet music arranged by Bang on a Can All-Star David Lang.
The score is divided into three main sections: "Summer," "Fall" and "Winter." (Springtime has no place in this story.) We veer from ethereal keyboard chimes to harsh bowed strings and back again. Then two full minutes of fidgety seagulls and restless ocean waves. Or maybe that's just how they sound to me. |
